Phyllis Tuckwell’s Hospice Care at Home team visits patients in their own homes and in care homes.

Local charity Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care has recently received a grant for £5,000 from ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, to help fund its Hospice Care at Home (HCAH) team.

ABF The Soldiers’ Charity is the national charity of the British Army. It supports soldiers and veterans of all ages, and their families, and since 2000 has given £135,500 to PhyllisTuckwell, as some of the patients whom Phyllis Tuckwell cares for have served in the Army.

Phyllis Tuckwell’s HCAH team cares for and supports patients who have decided that they would prefer to spend their last days in their own homes or in a care home, rather than in hospital or at the Hospice. The team looks after nearly 600 patients a year, visiting them and caring for them, enabling them to spend their last days in this comfortable and familiar environment, surrounded by their family and their memories. The team also offers valuable emotional support for patients’ families and carers too.

“We would like to thank ABF The Soldiers’ Charity for this generous grant and for their ongoing support, which helps enormously in enabling us to provide our vital care,” said Claire McDonald, Individual Giving Manager at Phyllis Tuckwell.

Brigadier (Ret’d) Robin Bacon, Chief of Staff at ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, adds: “We are here to provide a lifetime of support to all those who have served their country by being a part of our Army family. Phyllis Tuckwell does outstanding work looking after those in need and we are grateful for all of their hard work."

Phyllis Tuckwell provides supportive and end of life care for adult patients and families who are living with an advanced or terminal illness such as cancer, in West Surrey and North East Hampshire. Every day it supports over 250 patients, relatives and carers - in their own homes and care home, at the Hospice in Farnham and at the Beacon Centre in Guildford - through a mix of medical and nursing care, therapies, counselling, social work advice and practical support. However, as the NHS/Government only covers 20% of its costs, it has to raise over £20,000 a day to be able to offer all of these services, which are given free of charge to its patients and their families.
