Based in Guildford, halow is one of the area’s leading charities and childcare support and information services, supporting young people aged 16 – 35 with a learning disability. halow believes that the young people we support have a right to the same life choices and chances as any other young person.
Founded in 2006 by five families with children with special needs, halow was named after the young people who inspired the charity – Harriet, Amber, Laura, Oliver and William.
The Guildford based charity supports young people aged 16 to 35 with a learning disability, communication disability or special need. halow firmly believes that young people, irrespective of their disabilities or needs, have the right to be part of their communities, the respect of their peers and the freedom to choose the life they want.
The young people halow supports want the opportunity to:
· Make and build relationships
· Be part of their community
· Find meaningful employment
· Have a home of their own
Our work is centred on developing creative opportunities and removing social barriers. We do this by running a regular youth club in Guildford and Haslemere, organising activities on weekends and during school holidays and recruiting and matching Buddies to support our children.
Our youth club focuses on creative arts such as music and drama; halow’s activities are sponsored by volunteers and are chosen by the young people themselves. From trips to the cinema to bi-monthly events at Quake nightclub in nearby Woking, these events also provide families with a valuable short break.
