The sound of dripping water coming from somewhere other than a tap can be a property owner’s worst nightmare. If you spot a leak the first thing to do is find the stopcock. This is normally located under the kitchen sink or in a similar place where water pipes enter the building.
We always recommend to clients who have moved to a new property, that they establish where the stopcock is so that they know where to look in an emergency.
Once you have found the stopcock you need to turn the valve clockwise until it stops, this should shut off the water supply into the property and help prevent further damage.
Remember if the leak is from a water tank supply in your loft then there is still the possibility of water still escaping from the system after you have turned the stopcock off.
If you suspect that this is the case then the best course of action is to leave the stopcock turned off, and turn your bath taps on this will allow the tanks to drain.
Taking this simple action should help to minimise the damage to your property, whilst you call a plumber to fix the problem.
