Most Guernsey folk are familiar with Brehon tower which stands in the stretch of water known as the Little Russel between Guernsey and Herm. This small and isolated landmark was once home to 35 artillery men keen to defend the island's position from the threat of French invasion. Built by Thomas Charles de Putron in 1856 Brehon tower now just houses a colony of Common Tern but remains an important navigation mark in this busy little stretch of water.
