Museums – London Borough of Greenwich – Museums
Commissioned by Anne of Denmark in 1616 and opened to the public by King George VI on 27 April 1937, the 17th-century Queen's House welcomes you all year round in Greenwich.
Part of The National Maritime Museum, The Queen's House was also awarded a World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 1997.
Leading European Painters such as Jordaens and Orazio Gentileschi were commissioned to decorate the museum ceiling panels and provide other art work in the museum.
Classical sculptures of the museum were provided with the purchase of the Gonzaga dukes of Mantua's collection. You can still admire the grotesque style painted ceiling of the Queen’s Presence Chamber, the first centrally unsupported spiral stair in Britain, ironwork known as tulip stairs, the discoloured painted woodwork of the Hall and its finely laid 1635 marble floor.
Since 2001, the Queen's House has been reorganised to showcase the Museum's fine-art collection, with an ongoing programme of temporary exhibitions and displays, including contemporary work.
The museum has an education programme and active events and continues in its successful role as a place for corporate and private entertainment in Greenwich.
