Care homes in Gateshead are inviting local people to join in its celebrations for Care Home Open Day.
On Friday 28th June, the team at Armstrong House on Lobley Hill Road will be opening the doors to the care home from 11am-3pm, and over at Hadrian House, on Garden Street, from 2pm-4pm, for two free family-friendly events to celebrate Care Home Open Day.
The countrywide initiative aims to create lasting relationships between care homes and their local communities, and this year’s theme celebrates the role of arts within care, which is important in encouraging residents’ self-expression, and helps to create meaningful experiences.
Both care homes have organised art-themed parties to celebrate the open day, with entertainment, activities and creative fun for all.
Visitors to Armstrong House can look forward to a Tai Chi exhibition and take part in a variety of arts and crafts classes. Guests will also enjoy a cookery demonstration, wine, cheese and nibbles, and a residents’ photography exhibition.
At Hadrian House, visitors will be treated to prosecco and tasty hors d’oeuvres, and there will also be live entertainment to get everyone in the party spirit, as well as an art gallery showcasing residents’ work.
Shirley Summerbell, home manager at Armstrong House, said: “Creative activities are such an important part of life for people in care, whether it’s painting to help enhance hand-eye coordination, or just reminiscing by putting on some music – the arts are a vital part of life here at Armstrong House.”
Jane Fox, home manager at Hadrian House, said: “We’re so excited to be hosting our Care Home Open Day event this month. We had a brilliant time when we did this last year so it made sense for us to open our doors to the local people of Gateshead again and show them just how much fun you can have in a care home.”
As part of a nationwide competition across Care UK homes, Armstrong House and Hadrian House will be developing works of art in the lead up to the open day, which will be showcased at the event.
