What is Kumon?
The Kumon organisation is a leading world-wide provider of supplementary education which has been developing the full potential of children in maths and English for over 50 years.
The Formby Kumon Study Centre was established at The Harington Centre in Harington Road, Formby 11 years ago. Debbie Lunt BSc (Hons), MSc has been the Kumon instructor there for seven years. Debbie is also a Kumon parent to Dan (a Kumon student for 8 years, now at Lancaster University) and Emma (still a Kumon student, attending Formby High).

How does the Kumon programme work?
Enrolment
Before any commitment is made, you will be invited to attend a face-to-face meeting with Debbie with no obligation involved.
At this meeting Debbie will:
- carefully assess your child’s current ability in maths and/or English and advise you which study programme is most suitable
- explain exactly what is involved in studying with Kumon
- agree realistic, stimulating and challenging goals for your child
- establish what you can expect from Kumon, and what Kumon will expect from you
- find your child’s easy start point in the programme, allowing them to experience success and achievement from day one
There is no obligation to enrol at this stage, we simply want to make sure that we do what is best for your child and that you are fully aware of, enthused by and committed to our approach at Kumon Maths and English in Formby.
Daily Study
After enrolment, studying with Kumon Maths and English in Formby is deceptively simple. Your child will be given individually tailored work for each day of the month. The work takes approximately 10-20 minutes per day which your child will work on independently.
Once or twice a week your child will attend our Formby Study Centre for approximately 30 minutes when Debbie will collect and assess homework completed by your child, monitor your child’s work that day and ensure that they leave the Study Centre with the correct amount of homework to see them through until their next visit to the centre. You and your child will have clear goals to aim for and a comprehensive understanding of the progress being made.
Mastery through Practice
Kumon students don’t just study topics – they learn to excel in them. Being able to solve problems quickly and accurately builds confidence and a sense of achievement.
Independent Learning
Each new piece of work your child studies is slightly more challenging than the last, building steadily on abilities acquired in earlier levels. This enables them to develop independent learning skills by progressing through their own efforts, reaping their own rewards in a structured and motivational environment.
