A superb place..............having eaten extensively in Greece with my inlaws, Nikos can take pride in his food, service and general ambience. Excellent food, value for money, attentive but unfussy service........EXCELLENT.
The Griffin Inn, Mynydd Isa "BUT theyʼre cold," said my friend as she bit into the dolamades - ops! I hadnʼt realized she didnʼt know that. Was our spontaneous night out going to turn into a disaster? Three of us had decided on impulse to go for a Saturday night meal. We chose the Greek restaurant at The Grifffin Inn, Mynydd Isa, near Mold, a few moments drive away from the home of my friend, the one now hesitating over whether to carry on eating the dolamades - vine leaves stuffed with rice and served with tsatziki, a cucumber flavoured dip. Having grown up next door to a Greek family who regularly offered culinary delights over the garden fence, I have long had a liking for this starter. Itʼs tasty and satisfying, but not so filling it ruins the main course. To be fair to my friend she does face a challenge when going out to eat, being a sufferer of coeliac disease which means she has to stick to a gluten free diet. This then seemed the ideal option to start with. The third friend in our little group - who always has a smaller appetite - opted out of a starter. I tucked into to my own stuffed vine leaves, hoping to lead by example. They were pretty delicious, but then I am biased. I like them anyway. All credit to my friend, she persevered. She didnʼt declare ʼyumʼ at the end, but she did finish the lot. My fears of catastrophe were averted, even more so when she said with a beaming smile: "Itʼs like being abroad in here, like weʼve come to another country." The atmosphere was cosy and friendly, Greek music playing in the background and the gentle buzz of fellow diners talking and laughing among themselves in a summer holiday kind of mood. The dining area is small, but not cramped, with a homely décor. Based in a village pub, this is not a ʼsilver serviceʼ venue, but the staff were friendly, efficient and unintrusive. We moved on to the mains. It was a tough decision, but my two friends both opted for the stifado - beef in a tomato and onion sauce. I went veggie - though I am not actually a vegetarian - something called gigantes plaki, a sort of bean casserole. A vaguely humorous sounding name, I thought, but Iʼd give it a try. When the dishes arrived there were united gasps at the ample portions. I seemed to have two mains. The menu did say my beans would be served with a salad, but I imagined it would consist of a couple of lettuce leaves and a few quarters of tomato, so often what an ʼinclusive saladʼ consists of in restaurants. But this was the full Greek version, complete with feta cheese, dressing and olives - practically a main course in itself. Where to start? My fork hovered for a second or two before plunging into the beans. Good decision. As vegetables go, beans have always been classed as the comedians of the bunch, targets for rich and saucy humour. Well laugh if you want, but these beans were beautiful. Flavoursome and filling, not at all stodgy and very friendly on the stomach, which emitted not a single gripe about my choice. My two friends were similarly delighted with the beef dish, accompanied by chips and salad. The meat, they agreed was tender, the sauce a pleasing mix of fruitiness, gentle herbs and spices, complementing the beefʼs natural flavour. Overall the menu was not huge, offering a sufficiently varied, but unintimidating choice of Greek dishes, including familiar names such as moussaka and souvlaki (kebabs) but also some traditional English fare like steak and ale pie, Cumberland sausage and mash. Full marks for the prices. With starters averaging around £2.50 and mains from about a fiver to eight quid, this was value for money for the high quality of food. Puddings too were nicely priced at £2.50. In line with the Mediterranean theme I should have had Greek yoghurt and honey, but the words ʼjam roly polyʼ slipped out by acci
the griffin in mynydd isa is recently refurbished pub with excellent clientelle both with food and drink. nikos has run the griffin for 12 years and has done a very good job with help from his team of staff who work together and provide the best service. the greek theme in the griffin restaurant is excellnt and has taken off extremely well as all the greek food is home cooked by nikos himself. the griffin feels like you are in greece when you are having a meal with nikos waiting on to help you along with any advice you may need about the dishes being served and the greek music playing in the background. the griffin also caters for lotʼs of functions-birthdayʼs, christenings, and any others. outside, the beer garden is very spacious and has swings and other play toys for children and is well enclosed for safety of children. all in all i would recommend the griffin as a excellent public house for all to visit.
