While the trees are in full leaf it is the ideal time to give them a quick glance over to spot any problems they may have. Things that will show you if your tree is unhealthy or needs attention:
· Branches (especially at the top of the tree) dying back from the tips often precede the death of the entire tree.
· A particularly dense canopy can often cause a garden to become very dark but may be easily be remedied by thinning out the extra growth.
· Deadwood is not necessarily a sign of poor health but if the dead branches overhang well used areas then it is advisable to have them removed before they cause any damage
· Fungal brackets. If any of these are visible at any time of year then it is always recommended to contact a professional to identify them and check the health of the tree.
· Pockets of rot or any wounds in the tree (especially at the base of the trunk) are an indication of poor structural integrity
