Conifer hedges are one of the most common features in English gardens; as well as being evergreen, they are fast growing which makes them an easy and quick option for gaining that much loved privacy in a garden. However, as with all so-called ‘quick and easy’ options, comes the big drawback. Most Conifers bear the curse of being very high maintenance once they are established and if left unchecked can ruin a garden.
If a Conifer is reduced back to the dead, brown foliage found further into the tree, then it will not be able to put on any new growth and will remain bare. Because of this issue, if a Conifer hedge is not regularly maintained, it will continue to grow outwards and take up more and more space in the garden which can then never be regained without taking out the hedge entirely or cutting it back so far that it just looks hideous!
To this end, especially coming into the summer months when we all like to be outside enjoying our gardens, make sure that giving your Conifer hedge a good trimming isn’t a job that gets missed off the list for just one year, or next year you may find that you’ve lost another foot of your garden!
