Journeys from Home
A celebration of the work of Elizabeth Blackadder.
12 November 2011 - 25 February 2012
In celebration of Falkirk born artist, Dame Elizabeth Blackadder's eightieth birthday and to mark her outstanding career, The Park Gallery presents Journeys from Home - A celebration of the work of Elizabeth Blackadder.
Journeys from Home gives us a glimpse of the path Dame Elizabeth Blackadder has taken to become one of Britain's pre-eminent artists. From her beginnings in Falkirk, this exhibition follows Elizabeth on her journeys beyond this point; first to Italy as a travel scholar and then on her subsequent journeys throughout Europe and as far afield as Japan with her late husband, the artist John Houston.
For all her journeys abroad, Elizabeth has settled in Edinburgh, not far from her starting point, and 'home' is reflected in her choice of subject matter; Elizabeth's own cats make regular appearances in her work, whilst the irises and tulips of her watercolours are not merely botanical specimens but in the main are grown in Elizabeth's own garden.
At the same time, endless curios picked up on travels abroad have found their way home to Elizabeth's studio in Edinburgh, an eclectic array that speaks of her fascination with the exotic. She delights here in the pattern and texture of Indian embroidered textiles, including a jacket that she used to wear regularly and a beautiful kimono from Japan. Objects selected for their colour or shape and for the associations of time and place that they carry with them.
This exhibition is in partnership with Journeys Together, Elizabeth Blackadder and John Houston at the Pathfoot Building,
