The Help Zone aims to help those who find themselves in difficulties following a night out, be it from injury, drinking too much alcohol or being a victim of violence.
Situated at St Mary Arches Church in Mary Arches Street, the Help Zone will operate each Saturday - traditionally the busiest night each week. The Help Zone is being delivered by Exeter Community Safety Partnership's Alcohol, Violence & Night-Time Economy Group, bringing together the work of Exeter City Council, the Police, South West Ambulance Service and Exeter Street Pastors.
Cllr Keith Owen, Lead Councillor for Environment, Health and Wellbeing, said: "This will provide those running into any problems on a night-out with a central place to go to for help. Street pastors will have a handy location to which they can take vulnerable individuals. Paramedics will be able to treat minor injuries on the spot, taking the burden away from accident and emergency departments and Police will be able to take statements without having to travel out of the city centre. "
"We're happy to be involved in supporting the Help Zone, following a successful trial shortly before last Christmas . Help Zones have worked well in a number of other locations around the country, including Plymouth and Bournemouth, and we believe the Help Zone in Exeter will make a significant contribution to making the City Centre at night time a more welcoming and safer place to be."
Police Supt. Keith Perkin, said: “It’s satisfying to know that people have a safe place to go to in the City Centre if they get into difficulty on a night out. We want people to have fun when they visit Exeter City Centre, but we urge them to be aware of their limits and to drink sensibly, as alcohol is a major contributor to becoming a victim.”
