Matthew Reece, Master Equipment Technician who organised the event said:  “We had a total of 16 cadets for five of the ten weeks. Every week we set new goals, so starting with the very basics of using ladders and hoses to finishing with a visit to Control and Station 60 to see practical applications. Due to the size of this group we spilt them into two watches, so they were aware they were competing with each other.

“The course has huge benefits to the students from building confidence, to learning how to work in a team, the development of better communication skills, to very practical skills, as well as each cadet finding out about their own learning style. They also walk away with three credits towards a GCE qualifications

“We really see a difference in some of the cadets from the first night when they arrive scared and too afraid to do anything, to later becoming confident leaders. They really jelled as a team which is fantastic.”

The training completed with a passing out parade involving a full RTC demonstration, giving the cadets the opportunity to show their new skills to their parents and friends.

Matthew concluded: “It was a really valuable experience for all concerned as we learn as much from them, as they learn from us.”
