The iconic annual concert from the Berlin Philharmonic returns to the Exeter Picturehouse again this year on New Year’s Eve. Tickets will go on sale to Members on Friday 25 October and on general release from 1 November.
Tuesday 31 December, 4.30
Lang Lang, piano
Berliner Philharmoniker
Sir Simon Rattle, conductor
Repertoire:
Johannes Brahms: Hungarian Dances No. 1 in G minor and No. 3 in F Major
Sergei Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No. 3
Paul Hindemith: Symphonic Dance No. 3
Antonín Dvorák: Three Slavonic Dances
Aram Khachaturian: Four Dances from Gayane
For the coming year-end celebration, audiences will enjoy primitive as well as elegant rhythms from the rich musical traditions of Europe’s geographical centre: two of the most popular Hungarian Dances by Brahms, and three of the Slavonic Dances by Dvorák. Not quite as well known are the melodies from the ballet Gayane by the Soviet Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian, although at least one piece from this work, the famous Sabre Dance, is familiar to any music fan. An exciting counterpoint is the third movement of Paul Hindemith’s Symphonic Dances.
The programme will be complemented by Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3. After his New Year’s Eve concert performance in 2009, the very gifted pianist Lang Lang is now returning to the stage of Berlin’s Philharmonic Hall. His brilliant, sensitive piano playing – which always sounds spontaneous, despite all his artistry – wows his fellow musicians and the public alike.
Full price £20, Members £13, Concessions £15
General sales will open on Friday 1 November.
This screening will take place at all Picturehouse Cinemas apart from Duke's at Komedia, The Cameo, Edinburgh and The Gate, Notting Hill.
