Evesham Relay for Life 2011, what a successs!

Evesham Relay for Life 2011 was a fantastic success. And went International !

Last weekend saw around a thousand people support the annual Evesham Relay for Life event at Evesham High School. The event is a culmination of a whole year of fund raising activity to raise funds for Cancer Research UK, which has no funding from central government. Evesham’s Relay teams have raised a fantastic £112,000 in the last 3 years.

The 2011 event which is one of the biggest Relay events in the whole of the UK saw 39 teams of  “FUNdraisers” keeping a team member on the walking track during the 24 hour event. With well over 500 team members and a list of 50 local Cancer Survivors who were the VIP guest for the day it proved once again to be s fantastic event for Evesham. The event has a lighter side and was supported by local bands and dancers who entertained the crowds during Saturday.

This years event saw a visitor from Australia who is a Chairman of Melbourne Relay who came to join a team offer his support during his UK holiday. Tony Hardy said that he had learned a lot from the Evesham Relay that he will be exporting to Oz as he said “ We are all heading for the same goal of raising vital funds to help research into finding a cure for cancer. It was a pleasure to walk alongside other relayers and I am impressed by the efforts that the whole community puts in to this great event.”

Evesham’s Chairman Gavin Yapp presented him with an Official T Shirt signed by the committee as a gesture of thanks for his attendance.

Relay 2011 also saw a local lady Rachel Moss who was in a team presented with the Spirit of Relay award . She has battled cancer twice and is now undergoing more treatment to stamp out the disease. The event closed under the scorching midday sun with a balloon release in memory of cancer sufferers who lost the battle.

The total raised by the event will be announced next month at a Post Relay Party at Bengeworth Club on the 16th July at 7.30pm. Anyone interested in seeing how the fun gets put into fundraising should come along and find out about Relay 2012 too.
