Four of Epsom’s green spaces have been recognised as being among the best in the country.

Epsom Common Local Nature Reserve, Ewell Court Park, Nonsuch Park and Alexandra Recreation Ground have all gained Green Flag status - a national award which rewards the best green spaces.

Councillor Jan Mason, chairwoman of the leisure committee, said: "Our green spaces are incredibly important to our residents and the work we have undertaken in the four winning sites can be duplicated elsewhere in the borough.

"By carefully selecting the four sites that we nominated, comprising a park with sporting facilities, formal gardens, historic parkland and a local nature reserve, we now have templates to address the other green spaces in the borough".

Green spaces are judged in eight areas for the award: being a welcoming place, being healthy, safe and secure, being clean and well-maintained, on sustainability, conservation and heritage, community involvements, marketing and management.
