 WHAT IS PAT TESTING?

Portable Appliance Testing or PAT Testing as it is better known, is a way of ensuring the safety of electrical appliances in your workplace by carrying out some basic maintenance checks.

It is reported by the Health and Safety Executive that 25% of all reportable electrical accidents involve portable appliances. Many fires are due to faulty electrical appliances.

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 place the responsibility for the safety of electrical equipment on the shoulders of the employer.

The requirements of the regulations clearly determine the necessity for electrical safety testing.

Electrical safety obligations are not limited to businesses. Landlords are also responsible for ensuring the regular testing of all appliances they provide for their tenants.

All portable appliances with a mains plug need PAT Testing.  These include:

• Computers, monitors and peripherals requiring mains power
• Audio and telephone equipment requiring mains power
• Kettles, microwaves, and other kitchen appliances
• Vacuum cleaners
• Extension leads

 Therefore, you need to have all your portable appliances checked by a suitably qualified person on a regular basis. We use the latest PAT equipment to test both 230V and 110V appliances.
