When I was 19, I started to get tired all the time, and had occasional stomach pains. My abdomen became a strange shape and started to increase in size. I was diagnosed with a type of ovarian cancer. In February 2012 I went to Find Your Sense of Tumour, which is organised by Teenage Cancer Trust. I hadn’t yet met any other young people with cancer and felt that it might help me. It really surprised me to see how many other young people get cancer and how many different types of cancer we can get. It was very inspirational to see them carrying on with their lives and it was great to be able to talk to so many different people going through similar things, not just about cancer but normal things too. I made some great friends there and it encouraged me to go to more things like FYSOT as well as to start volunteering and fundraising. It helped me to think positively and encouraged me to want to go back to university which I was considering not doing.
I was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma when I was 16. Cancer is one of those things which everyone says isn’t going to happen to them. It’s always something which is going to happen to someone else. I was treated on the Teenage Cancer Trust unit in Leeds and it’s unlike any other hospital ward I can imagine. It was to become my second home over the next few months and sometimes I’d spend more time there than I would at home. Along with the usual nurses (who are quite frankly amazing and the people who saved my life) a youth coordinator also works on the ward. As boring as her official title sounds she was fantastic! She made sure we all had stuff to do and tried her hardest to get everyone into the dayroom. Basically a room with a table, kitchen, a TV and a PS3, Xbox and Wii designed to get everyone up and out of bed and get everyone to talk to each other. Teenage Cancer Trust did amazing things for me and now I’m trying to do everything I can to help people who are in a similar situation as me.
We took part in the first ever Eastbourne Blue day, its a brilliant charity and we were very pleased to managed to raise what we did , the concept of Blue day was fun focused and obviously a great cause. looking forward to more Blue Day fun next time around .
Why would you not help this marvellous charity they do a hard job and do it so well. A difficult cause and difficult lives made better by people who care
All the staff at Parker Building Supplies are supporting Teenage Cancer Trust this year as our chosen charity. We have done some great fundraising events such as a walk up Snowdon, running events, skydives, cake sales, selling TCT merchandise and we are all really looking forward to Going Blue on 14th October. Supporting TCT has developed some great team building within the company as we are getting to do some fundraising activities with other branches which is great fun! Its great knowing that all the fundraising we are doing to going directly towards helping local, young people fighting cancer and that we are helping to raise awareness of the great work that the charity does. The reason I give my support to the Teenage Cancer Trust is that I have first hand knowledge of how important the specialized care they provide is to young people suffering with cancer. The Units provide Doctors and nurses who are used to treating teenagers and who are familiar with the types of cancers they contract. The Units also provide an environment which is relaxed and happy so patients actually ‘ look forward’ to going for their regular treatment. Lastly the parents are not forgotten and are able to be with the young people throughout their stay which is very important. All teenagers who contract any form of cancer should be able to access a specialized’ Teenage Cancer Unit’ so the more money that is raised, the more can be opened and of course more research into what causes the disease.I believe this positive environment went a long way to aiding the recovery in my sons case.
Teenage Cancer Trust see me as a teenager first and a cancer patient second and this makes a massive difference. It means I can be myself with people who understand what I’m going through.
