U: Upper body

The biggest muscles in our upper body are our latissimus dorsi. These run down the sides of our body from under our shoulder muscles, these are the ones which can give us a “V shape”. The best exercises for these muscles  are pull ups, lat pull downs and rows.

The big chest muscles are the pecs, made up of the pectoralis major and pectoralis minor. Exercises for the pecs include press-ups, bench presses and chest flyes.

The shoulder muscles are made up of the anterior deltoid, medial deltoid and posterior deltoid. These muscles will be worked when we do rows and presses. To focus on them specifically do shoulder presses and lat raises.

Our arms are made up of the triceps, biceps and forearms. Do dips, tricep extensions and pushdowns for the triceps; dumbbell curls and barbell curls for the biceps and wrist curls for the forearms.

These exercises are the basic ones. To find out more about them and lots of variations look them up online, in fitness magazines or DVDs. Or e-mail me for more specific and detailed advice.
