Roads to Ruin: East Grinstead Potholes

Bookmark and Share

One of the worst things left behind by the cold, drizzly days of winter tends to stick around for much longer than chilblains and chapped lips. It’ll bring you crashing back down to earth from a sunshine-filled high with a tongue-biting bump, and the effects can have rather an expensive result.

I am, of course, talking about potholes. These nuisances occur when water freezes in little cracks in the road, causing the surface to crack, and often leaving some gaping crevices in our local roadways. After another hard winter of increased blizzards and yet more ‘big freezes’, the potholes in East Grinstead seem ever more prevalent with cracks appearing all over the area.

Main routes such as London Road, Queens Road and De la Warr Road are among the dozens affected, causing havoc for motorists and cyclists alike. However, while residents may feel a bit lost considering where their taxes are going if the roads continue to get worse, West Sussex County Council is said to have invested £15 million in road repairs this financial year.

West Sussex County Council has also said it aims to repair reported potholes within 28 days of them being reported, or within three for major defects. Have you seen a result from your reporting potholes? Copthorne Bank in Copthorne currently sports a 12ft pothole on what is a very busy road – this recent feature on the BBC News website shows striking evidence of terrible road conditions, and this is only the tip of the iceberg.
