I noticed that a new golden card has been unveiled to bring shoppers back to the town's high street.
The East Grinstead Loyalty Card has been thought up by the town's traders to keep people shopping locally. The card will offer shoppers discounts at a variety on shops in the town centre.
Graham Stevens from the Graham Stevens Gallery, Middle Row, said the card will be distributed to every household in the town and the outlying villages.
He said: "It will be supported three ways with the East Grinstead Business Association, the Courier and Observer and the town council. The idea is that everyone carries the card and we will have promotions in the shop windows so they know what they can get with it. We will be offering discounts or giveaways."
It is hoped the card will work alongside new town mayor Lee Marmara's campaign for the year, 'Keep it Local'. Designed locally, it will be a gold wallet-sized card with the town's green crest in the centre.
Mr Stevens said: "We will be relying on the public for their loyalty. It's about keeping them out of Crawley, Tunbridge Wells and Bluewater. They do similar things in other towns. Lewes is a good example, they've got the Lewes pound. We've been looking at other towns to see what they do to promote themselves.
The card should be available in the next few weeks and it is hoped it will not just be the traders who will join up to the scheme but local services, like plumbers and electricians will also get involved.
"All the East Grinstead Business Association members and everyone we've spoken to seems very keen," Mr Stevens added.
Here at 'thebestofEastGrinstead' we think the new card is a brilliant idea because the town should do everything it can to support local businesses rather than lose them. Will it encourage you to shop local?
