You can now really see the progress of the Bluebell Railway's restoration of the final northerly section from Kingscote Station into the East Grinstead mainline station.
From Sainsbury's car park you can see that the new platform and track in the station section from the viaduct at Gardenwood Road are well advanced. The remaining challenge is the excavation of the landfill from the old cutting - an enormous undertaking that commences next spring.
The plan is to extract the landfill by train, 1000 tons per day, each train saving 50 lorry movements. The latest section of track, into the station at East Grinstead will be used for this, initally as a 1-week trial to prove the feasibility and costings.
Removal in this manner has numerous advantages. Apart from the obvious one of taking lorries off the roads, it requires much less infrastructure on site at Imberhorne, so enabling an operation that can economically be switched on and off as the money is available. It will also be cheaper, enabling the line to reach East Grinstead sooner. They still need donations and contributions to fund the removal.
