Anxiety and Stress - How hypnotherapy can help

This week the Independent reports on how excessive worrying is increasingly treated by drugs rather than therapy. They go on to say that some of the drugs are addictive, and may end up causinmg more of a problem than that which existed already.

It may be necessary to have some anxiety in our lives, as it helps us to perform well. But do we need the quick fix promised by the pills? Our fight/flight stress response system may have been useful in the days of antiquity - when we had to run away from a tiger, in order to survive. But it may not be so useful when we are faced with a traffic jam, or larger worries about climate change, terrorism, and the recession.

Stress is big news. Part of the reason for this is that stress kills - by shutting down our bodily systems.

Our digestive system suffers - if we can't digest food, we miss out on essential nutrients - the reproductive system suffers as does the growth process.

It suppresses the immune system- we open the door to infections, diseases, allergies, and cancer.

It confuses the metabolism - we can gain weight faster even whilst eating healthily - giving bad cardiac health and heart disease.

Stress is the number one cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Men and women tend to deal with stressful situations differently. Men are more likely to respond with aggression ( fight ) whilst women are more likely to flee ( flight ) and to turn to others for help.

But in a lot of cases we cannot fight and we cannot flee and the internal hormones released into our systems ( adreneline and cortidsol ) to prepare for action, are not used up. This leads to complications. Here are a few stress related conditions -

Anorexia, Anxiety  and Panic Disorders, Asthma, Allergies, Skin Diseases, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Constipation, Depressed Immune System, Depression, Fibromyalgia, Headaches, Migraines, High Bliood Pressure, High Cholesterol, hypertension, Muscle Stiffness, Sleep Disturbances, Stroke, Ulcers.

The amygdala - the part of the brain that governs emotions - becomes oversensitive - so we can explode with anger and frustration.

It is the almygdala that the medications aim to target, and many will self medicate with alcohol and drugs. ut what is acheived by creating alcohol and drug dependacies?

Hypnotherapy, meditation, and yoga are excellent tools for creating a natural improvement in relaxation response to stress and anxiety. The benefits are many -

Decreased Heart Rate, Decreased Blood Pressure, Lower Pulse Rate, Decreased Muscle Tension, Reduction of Cortisol, Stress Release, Calm Internal Dialogue, Expansion of Attention, Happiness, Decraease in Rate of Aging, More Energy.

The state of hypnosis is very like the state between waking and sleeping. A hypnotherapist will talk you down into a very relaxed state. Then he will test to make sure you are there. Once you are there...
