WEA Dover branch offers a several excellent educational and social opportunities for local people in Dover, Deal & Sandwich.
The WEA has been offering adult education classes across the UK for over 100 years. The Dover branch offers interesting and stimulating adult education classes based in Deal and Dover.
Volunteer branch organisers - professional tutors
The Dover WEA adult education branch serves Dover, Deal and Sandwich and is run by volunteers, who request particular courses, in consultation with students.
The four courses offered in Dover and Deal in the autumn term are:
Solo Singing
Venue: Methodist Church, Lewisham Road, River, Dover
Start date: 21 September 2009
Times: Mondays, 10.30 to 12.30
Number of sessions: 25
If you love to sing, join this friendly, supportive group and hear your range and technique improve dramatically.
A second Solo Singing course will be offered from 12 November, on Monday afternoons, from 1.30 to 3.30 at the Methodist Church, Lewisham Road, River.
Kent and the Arts
Venue: Landmark Centre, Deal
Start date: 23 September 2009
Times: Wednesdays, 2pm to 4pm
Number of sessions: 10
This is a unique chance to learn more about key cultural works that have been influenced or inspired by Kent, and to make connections between different artists and artforms.
Exploring Local History: researching the past 100 years
Venue: Landmark Centre, Deal
Start date: 24 September 2009
Times: Thursdays, 2pm to 4pm
Number of sessions: 20
Kentish historian Maureen Criddle offers a chance to examine an area of Upper Deal using primary sources, such as "Lloyd George's Little Domesday" of 1910 and the censuses.
Defending Kent?
Venue: St Leonard's Church Social Centre, Rectory Road, Deal
Start date: 25 September 2009
Times: Fridays 1.30 to 3.30
Number of sessions: 10
This is a fascinating opportunity to take a closer look at the forts and castles of Kent and to consider questions such as who built them? Why were they built? Were they solely defensive or were they high status homes? This course will include a visit to one of the sites studied.
Everyone is welcome
You don't need to have studied before to join a WEA class. You just need to be interested and awilling to learn.
Fees and Concessions
Course fees are just £3.40 per hour, payable by 10 week term, ie £68 for a 10 week course. Fees are waived for those receiving government benefits.
