A visit to the timeball tower on Deal seafront is an experience within a unique building. Deal's timeball is one of only four operational in the world. It's an iconic landmark seen from the sea and land and from the air. The mechanism is now automated with the ball dropping between 9am and 5pm when the tower is open for visitors from Easter until September. The museum houses many different types of clocks and time keeping instruments. This building represents a bygone era and is well worth a visit for all ages.
Your climb to the top of The Timeball Tower will take your through four floors of the history of the tower and once at the top you will have the most amazing views of Deal and the Channel, (so don't forget your camera) You will see the original mechanism used by the traditional Timeball Tower keepers that dropped the ball at 1pm daily. Today the timeball is controlled by a computor, with the timeball droping hourly between 9am & 5pm for visitors to see. A visit to Deal would not be complete without visiting this delightful treasure on the seafront, highly recommended for young and old alike with very resonable entrance fees of £2 for Adults and £1 for Children & Senior CitizensCarol Stickler
One of the few timeball towers still surviving in Britain is the Deal Timeball Tower Museum, which is the most important of all for historical reasons. It will appeal to all who are interested in time, navigation and, surprisingly, texting on mobile phones! A shutter telegraph previously stood on the site of the museum, able to communicate with London in a few minutes. A line of ships anchored across the Channel transmitted information about the Napoleonic Wars, via Deal, using text messaging that speeded up the transmission! Unfortunately, this wonderful system of rapid communication was demolished at the end of the Napoleonic Wars and reverted to the semaphore system. This museum is a must to visit. (Harold Chapman)
This museum is very unusual in the UK, others being found in Greenwich and Edinburgh. There are displays on 4 floors of important clocks, shutter and semaphore telegraphs, and parts of original submarine cables. The time ball descends hourly during opening times. Open Weekends May-Sep 12-4, and June-Sep Wed-Frids 11-4 with the help of Deal & Walmer Lions Club. Admission £2 or £1 for child or OAP. DVD and tourist souvenirs on sale.
A really interesting museum with great views of Deal town from the very top.Full of historical facts about the local history and a great landmark on our seafront
It was really interesting to find out how messages were sent before the telephone was invented. It was even more interesting to find out about Dealʼs smuggling past. The view from the top of the tower is stunning, we are so lucky to have one of only three towers left in the UK.It is remarkable to find that it still works too.My nine year old loved clocking in and out and having a go at sending messages of her own.
