The Secret Gardens of Sandwich, near Dover and Deal, are an idyllic retreat for both local folk and visitors to the region.

With their unique design and planting, inspired and originated by Gertrude Jekyll and now regenerated and replenished by an enthusiastic team of experienced gardeners, the gardens are a rare jewel at the heart of this quaint tourist town.

As the name suggests, the gardens lay untouched and overgrown for almost a quarter of a century. Now, after almost five years’ hard work, along with true dedication and passion by the owners Dominic and Stephanie Parker, they are once more a delight to behold throughout the year.

Ranked among the top ten gardens in the UK by celebrity gardener Monty Don, visitors flock to the gardens from all corners of Europe to see rare and exotic species from around the world interspersed with immaculately-manicured herbaceous borders, beautifully-scented roses, a vast array of spring bulbs – and 30 of the UK’s native 33 trees. This garden truly has something for everyone!

The Gardens are one of the few remaining examples of the collaboration between Sir Edwin Lutyens, who built The Salutation, the manor house at the heart of these 3.5 acre gardens, and designed the garden layout in 1912, and Gertrude Jekyll, who was responsible for the planting programme.

Examples of this very special relationship can be seen in the way the main dining room in the house replicates the garden’s bowling lawn, with its arch at one end and two opposing door ways.

Head gardener, Steve Edney has applied his professional expertise to oversee the restoration of The Secret Gardens, to this exceptional standard.

Feel and smell the variety of herbs and scents in the kitchen garden. Wander through the dappled shade of the laburnum walk. Be inspired by the beauty of the white garden and gather inspiration from the spring garden after the long winter.

Absorb the beauty of the herbaceous borders and roses, a riot of colour, texture and scent. The ornamental garden planting schemes will leave you yearning for the chance to see what the next season will bring to the garden.

A visit to The Secret Gardens of Sandwich is a perfect way to spend an afternoon and should be high on any visitor’s list of tourist attractions in the Sandwich area of Kent.

There is a stunning variety of plants to purchase – all lovingly nurtured on site – while the newly-opened gift shop houses an eclectic mix of specialist gifts and souvenirs. Among the wide range of exquisite gifts for the discerning customer, you will find Frank Usher umbrellas, herbal gifts from Nature’s Larder (manufactured on the Chatsworth estate), Parlane pumps – perfect for driving, plus crystal, glass and silverware from Lisbeth Dahl.

To round off your experience, what better than a luxury cream tea in the tranquil surroundings of The Salutation Tea Room?

Housed in the old gatehouse, here you can sip champagne and watch the world go by – or indulge yourself with our famous chocolate cream tea, home made cakes or a tasty snack from our selection of light lunches.

The Tea Room, using fine linen and crockery sourced from The Savoy in London, offers soups, quiches and daily home-cooked specials, as well as a fine selection of teas, coffees and infusions.

At just £25 for a season ticket to this stunning garden you won't be able to resist making regular trips to see how the garden evolves and matures or to sample treats at the garden tea room. Every season in the garden will bring an exciting and unique experience for the senses.

Of course, you can visit the Tea Room and Gift Shop at any time free of charge – but once you’re here, we feel sure you will want to take a peek inside!
