The Painted House was the best preserved and is now a major tourist attraction. Built about A.D. 200 it formed part of a large mansion or official hotel, for travellers crossing the Channel. It stood outside the great naval fort of the Classis Britannica, but in A.D. 270 it was demolished by the Roman army during the construction of a larger fort. Three of its main rooms were then buried substantially intact under its ramparts.Take a step into Dovers historic past and visit the Roman Painted House.

The Roman House at Dover had proved itself a site of international interest, both for tourists and for all students studying the Roman World. So far more than 600,000 visitors have been welcomed, including numerous foreign groups and school parties. In 1986 the Queen Mother spent a whole afternoon in the Painted House. The modest admission charges prove very good value for money and some of those who discovered the site are still working there and sometimes give lectures.
This is one of the very finest Roman houses ever discovered in Roman Britain. Its painted walls are unique in this country and of Italian standards. I congratulate those who made this fantastic discovery and hope that it may become a major tourist attraction in Dover.
A fantastic piece of Dovers History right in the heart of the main shopping area. Definitely worth a visit for those interested in how we used to live and local history. It definitely makes you think about what else might be lurking under our feet yet to be discovered!
