If you need someone to talk to in confidence, professional therapists at Deal Therapy House in Deal are here to listen and to help.
Frequently I am asked to explain the difference between the various therapies that I use in my practice. The need for counselling and psychotherapy is on the increase as more and more people feel the impact of stress and the issues that 21st century life throws at them.
Below I have composed a brief explanation of what and how each therapy works.
Counselling is normally used and is useful in the shorter term therapy, whereas psychotherapy often continues for longer and explores issues in greater depth. The process consists of the client attending the first meeting (an assessment meeting) where information including the client’s mental and physical well-being and past medical history is noted. Both are known as talking therapies. Following the initial meeting, further appointments are arranged and a programme of treatment is tailored individually for each client.
Successful counselling and psychotherapy is via a relationship of trust, which builds between therapist and client. Together a therapist and client will work toward a full understanding of the client’s personal life and problems or feelings they are experiencing. Exploration of the client’s memories, dreams, long-standing issues, childhood memories, relationships and the patterns we form within them all can be explored.
Psychotherapy and counselling offer an opportunity for the client to express their problems however small or big they may seem within an environment of respect’s The safety of the relationship between the client and the therapist allows a bond of trust to be formed in a non-judgemental and confidential atmosphere.
Below are some of the more common reasons why a person chooses to attend counselling/psychotherapy-
Stress and Depression due to Work, unemployment, redundancy, retirement, physical illness.
Relationship issues – between children and parents- (of all ages) between couples-between work colleagues, living with elderly parents, living with a partner who has dementia, divorce and separation, adoption. Panic and anxiety attacks- lack of self-esteem and confidence. Sexual issues- loss of libido, sexuality, abuses.
Victims of sexual, physical and mental abuse and domestic violence.
Mid life crisis, bereavement, unexpected changes in life, living with terminal illness, emotional/physical exhaustion as a carer.
Addictive behaviour including difficulties with food, gambling, smoking and taking illegal and prescription drugs.
Hypno-analysis and Hypnosis may be used to alleviate psychologically created physical and mental problems including stressful and painful periods, to help conquer fears and phobias, depression, stress, trauma and blocked emotion.
Some of the therapies I use include gardening which provide the following benefits:
- Scientific studies have proven that being in a garden will actively lower blood pressure.
- Improved physical, mental and emotional happiness.
- Suitable for all age groups.
- Those with special needs, the elderly, infirm, terminally ill, children, youth offenders.
- Beneficial for those in drug and alcohol rehabilitation,
- Suitable for the individual within their own homes and also for larger organisations including residential homes and businesses.
- Physical improvement of muscle tone, strength, stamina and suppleness in arms, hands and legs.
- The using of all senses, touch sight, smell, taste and hearing.
- The alleviation of stress and anxiety
- The use and improvement of mental agility and hand/eye coordination, the improving and honing of mental ability.
- The improvement of social skills via allotments and shared interests.
I also offer a service for those who are elderly or housebound and may have contracted dementia or may be terminally ill. By setting up memory boxes for the individual within their own homes it not only helps the client but also their families. How often have we said I wish I knew more about grandma or granddad. This is an opportunity to benefit more than just the client and something which will leave lasting memories.
