Motorists have lost one of their favourite free car parks in Darlington. They became used to leaving their vehicles in the space behind the closed office block in Beaumont Street West. It was regularly the first one to fill up each morning as drivers realised they could park there for nothing, while normal fees applied at an official car park a short distance away.
With spaces for 40 cars it was handy for many people who work in the town centre. Some travelled in early so they could be sure of a bay in it. But now bollards have been fixed at the entrance, so the free perk has ended. Some drivers must have saved a considerable sum over the months it was in use. Now they must pay up, or find one of the dwindling number of streets in which non-residents can still park free of charge.
