Dog no-go areas in our parks

Bookmark and Share

There's been a suggestion that dogs should be banned from all public parks nationally. The proposal is being considered seriously in other places, so let's make a start in Darlington with some no-go areas in our parks.

Many dog owners have shown they take no heed of signs telling them to clean up their pets' messes. They turn a blind eye if nobody else is watching, and walk on, leaving the filth to be trodden on by other folk. This regular fouling is not just a disgusting  nuisance - it is a serious hazard to health.

Our parks would be safer and more pleasant places if dogs were banned from some areas. Let's have a £60 fine for any owner who lets a dog into a restricted area, whether on a leash or not, whether it is seen fouling or not, whether the owner picks up the mess or not.

The idea will bring howls of anguish from many dog owners. But there is no doubt at all that it will be supported by a large majority of parents. A park ban might lead to more fouling on pavements and roads, so there should be heavier penalties for those who don't clean up.
