'Oh wouldn't it be loverly'
Boys and girls at Merchant Taylors' Schools are in rehearsals for their next joint schools' production of My Fair Lady to take place at the Senior Girls' School at the end of this month.
The classic musical, directed by Sian Tickle, Head of Drama, with musical direction from Director of Music, Jayne Thompson, tells the story of our loveable, Cockney, protagonist Eliza Doolittle, played by the brilliant Kate Attwood, who carries the plot and convincingly transforms over the course of the play. Upon a chance meeting with the formidable misogynist Professor Higgins (played by the talented Joe Hinds), Eliza becomes the subject of a wager based upon whether it is possible to turn her into a well-spoken youn lady. Will Barry plays the noble Colonel Pickering with dynamism and Head Boy Jack Roberts adds a touch of comedy and is both impenitent and scheming as Eliza's father Alfie Doolittle. Rehearsals have been in progress since many of the actors gave up much of their summer holidays in August in order to choreograph the entire musical themselves.
Once again the infamous Merchants' costume club, made up of students and overseen by the ever-committed Mrs Barry and Mrs Bramhall, has gone well above and beyond the call of duty. Many beautiful period-faithful costumes have been produced for the cast of around 100 girls and boys. The exhausted seamstresses have been alleviated only by Byrne and co who has generously provided some suit hire for the production. Thanks also to Childwall Table and Chair Hire and Skinners Cooperage for their help with the set.
Students ranging from Year 7 through to Sixth Form and many dedicated staff have been involved in bringing what promises to be an excellent Merchants' production to fruition.
