When you look at the facts, it is amazing that anyone continues to smoke.

About half of all smokers die from smoking-related diseases, principally cancers, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart disease. Smoking also increases the risk of developing various other conditions including: dementia, optic neuropathy, cataracts, macular degeneration, pulmonary fibrosis, psoriasis, gum disease, tooth loss, osteoporosis and Raynaud's phenomenon. As a result, long-term smokers live on average ten years less than non-smokers.

Other strong incentives to quit include the financial costs and effect on cosmetic appearance, with smokers looking much older than non-smokers. However, many people do try to quit but find they cannot kick the habit alone. An analysis 48 studies covering over 6000 smokers at the University of Iowa by F.L Schmidt and & C. Viswesvaran showed that sheer willpower had a success rate of only 6 per cent.  Self-help, in the form of books achieved modest success - around 9 per cent, while nicotine gum was a little better at 10 per cent.  New research in the USA reported in The Daily Telegraph concludes that nicotine patches are no better than willpower alone.

In contrast, hypnosis had the highest average success rate in Schmidt and Viswesvaran’s study, with face to face therapy faring better than hypnosis tapes.
