THE GREAT GARDEN AT KIRBY HALL
NR CORBY
The Great Gardens at Kirby Hall are within easy reach of Corby off the A43 just 4 miles NE of Corby (click on the map button to the right).
Extensive archaeological excavation between 1987 and 1994 failed to provide evidence of the garden layout in any great detail. There is evidence that George London visited Kirby Hall and advised on the gardens at Kirby Hall in 1693. It was decided therefore that reconstruction of the gardens at Kirby Hall, in 1997, would be based on the design of 1685 by George London for Lord Weymouth at Longleat House in Wiltshire. As the Longleat parterre was destroyed in the 18th century experts had only paper plans to work from.
The wonderful plants in The Great Garden at Kirby Hall near Corby make an impressive impact and give scale to the garden and a feel for what historic formal landscaping was really like.
