Were police vehicles marked bilingually before Brunstrom

Bookmark and Share

Listening to a debate on the Language reconciliation conference on Radio Wales today I heard a commentator say that Mr Brunstrom had said at the conference, that before Brunstrom the police were seen as an "English speaking army of occupation".

This is clearly a Brunstromism and totally wrong perception on his part based on hearsay which as a police officer he should not use as evidence. I treat that remark with the contempt it deserves.

I take issue with another remark which the pro Brunstrom commentator said. He stated that Mr Brunstrom had said that when he took over as Chief Constable the word Heddlu did not appear on police vehicles and he saw it as as simple to remedy, "just put it on".

The word Heddlu appeared on all police vehicles long before Mr Brunstrom came to North Wales. If the chief constable made this statement as stated by the commentator, then he was lying not merely mistaken.

The policy of marking police vehicles biligually was made long before Mr Brunstrom came to North Wales.

Anyone can look at the police helicopter which was brought into service pre Brunstrom. I can prove that its livery was designed in line with the force bilingual policy of the time. Both Police and Heddlu were marked on the helicopter.

Police officers should not tell lies, that is a simple fact. If they tell lies to make a political point in one area, what other lies do they tell?
