My children have been having lessons at this club for over three years. They are being given the opportunity to learn in a relaxed yet very disciplined environment (one of my sons, being lively, very quickly learnt where the boundaries are!). The classes are well structured to ensure natural progression through regular coaching and training. As a consequence the children's interest is maintained and they are doing well, as individuals, from the experience. The Reynolds family do a brilliant job of keeping the parents happy too! The club is currently enjoying increased success since moving to its own Dojo in recent months and members are encouraged to be proud of their club and to share in its success. We are proud to be part of Colchester Wado Ryu but the success is very much down to the hard work and dedication of Darren, Sharon, Brandon and Ethan Reynolds!

When i was younger i always wanted to learn martial arts my mother then managed to get me in touch with the colchester wado ryu club. From the day i started i knew it was something i was realy going to enjoy the Reynolds family and all the other students made me feel very welcome. Joining the class made me more confident in my self. The club has an extremely well layed out dojo and a sensei who is not only very profeshional but helps his students out in what ever way possible. I have trained at other clubs before but none seem to match this one joing the club is certainly something i have not regret doing & I would highly recommend it to anyone & everyone!

My children and I have been training with Colchester Wado Ryu for almost a year now and I can't think of one thing that I am disappointed with; the atmosphere is everything you could ask for, fun, friendly and helpful. Discipline is well maintained throughout the students, everyone is helpful to each other and as newcomers when we first started, we were welcomed and felt at ease immediately. In the past year my fitness has improved 10 fold as well as my flexibility, and my children as well as the above are more focused, have better hand eye coordination, more confident and can't wait to do there next class, they also now work together as a unit better (and that’s a lot for 4 children) as they help each other out when practicing at home. The club also has offered me a social network of friends, due to being a single parent to be able to get adult conversation, get fit and do my hobby at the same time is brilliant and that is just what Colchester Wado Ryu offer.
I would recommend this club to anyone as they are by far in my opinion the best in Colchester, we did previously train in another club in Colchester and can honestly say they in my experience leagues behind Colchester Wado Ryu.

We've been training with Sensei Darren Reynolds and Colchester Wado Ryu for over a year now. The atmosphere is friendly and fun yet disciplined. All students are encouraged and helped by Sensei and his sons to work to the best of their ability. The classes are well structured to provide enough repetitions to learn the moves but not so many that it becomes boring. There's also a really good balance of fitness, stretching and technique. The club offers a wide range of classes through the week at different levels of expertise. Sensei's wife, Sharon, provides admin support and is always on hand to provide a warm welcome and information.

We highly recommend Colchester Wado Ryu to anyone looking to improve their fitness. Its a fantastic martial arts club where anyone, even beginners, can get fit, learn defense skills and have fun whilst working hard.

Our family have been training with Darren at Colchester Wado Ryu for just over a year. We started together wanting to get our children away from the games consoles and do something as a family. We've all been made really welcome at the club and have all really enjoyed the sessions. This is the first exercise I have stuck with for 10+ years. All of our fitness levels have improved over the year and it has also increased the confidence of our children.

It is a very family orientated club with Darren's sons also helping out which adds to the friendly and family atmosphere. At the same time, encouragement is given where necessary and suggestions to improve techniques.

Thank you

Gareth

My daughter has been going to classes for just coming up to a year now and she still loves it. Grasshoppers was a fantastic start for her, she was not only being taught karate in a very professional way but a fun way too. It is very rare that you can get a good balance when teaching children but sensei with the help of Brandon and Eathon has managed this. She has since progressed to the junior class where the age range is from 5-13 yet sensei manages to get everyone in the class learning and interacting with each other. My daughter used to be very shy and since she has been doing karate with Wado Ryu her confidence has improved tenfold and she has not missed a class since she has started because she is always excited about going. If anybody says anything to me about karate I would 100% always recommend this club. They are fantastic, professional, fun and a teaching manner that is second to none.

Like I said before this is a family run club and Brandon and Ethan (Sensei’s' two sons) are fantastic at not only encouraging the younger students in the Grasshopper and Junior classes, but making sure that each child is completely disciplined within the class. Unless you have watched a class, it is difficult to comprehend, that as well as complete enjoyment and mastering basic Karate moves, each child is extremely focused and understands what is expected of them. The fun filled Grasshopper classes are a really great foundation for any child, not only for Karate but in physical development and personal growth.
Sharon, Sensei’s' wife, is always available during classes to deal with any enquiries, and is both approachable and friendly and we have often exchanged recipe ideas! In fact, parents often swap ideas not only on recipes but on many other issues! That is the whole ethos and atmosphere of the club, and there are not many clubs that you can go to, and as a family you feel completely welcomed both as a student and parent. This is what the Reynolds family do, and they do it well.

Colchester Wado Ryu is a family run Karate club, with an amazingly friendly atmosphere. Sensei Darren Reynolds is a credit not only to Karate but to the sporting world for his dedication to the improvement of all his students and the club.
From a personal point of view, Sensei has encouraged my two very shy children into not only taking part in his classes but flourishing in them and becoming outspoken not only in the classes but in general and they are actively promoting his classes to their friends as they get so much out of it. My son was having a particularly hard time at school through bullying, and until we could change his school, Darren was always there for him and gave him support and advice on the best way to handle the situation.
My 3 year old daughter has gone from being scared of her own shadow and not wanting to do anything that involved being away from me, to being extremely outgoing both in and out of classes.
Sensei listens to every student, clearly believes that every child matters and understands that each student is indeed an individual. We can contact him day or night to discuss not only karate but anything that is or has been upsetting any student or indeed parent. To Darren, it is not just about the sport but the development of the individual’s personality and through the sport encouraging friendships and teaching his students how to overcome both physical and psychological issues.
Each student seems proud to be a part of Colchester Wado Ryu and this is readily displayed in the number of students that attend displays etc. You can clearly see that the club is not about making profit as its main concern, but in the students themselves. This is also evident in the number of students who have joined through Word of Mouth rather than through external advertising.

I loved Karate when I was younger, although our sensei was very strict and traditional with the values. I was taught Karate especially the Wado style was about defence first and foremost.

As an adult trying to find a class for my son, the emphasis was not on defence but competition and fighting. This goes against everything I believe it should teach children.

Then I saw a leaflet of the Colchester Wado Ryu Karate club, I spoke to Darren and was relieved that his emphasis was on defence and fun.

My son went to the first lesson and loved it so much he wanted a suit for the next session. Then my partner went to a couples of classes and as I was watching the old bug caught me. I love it!

It is better than I remember, Darren makes it fun but makes you work for it too! It's the best form of exercise I have done for awhile and I have tried quite a few!!

We first took our young son to this club only because it was the closest one to us. Not only were we made to feel very welcome as non participants. But over the months, we enjoyed being there so much that my wife and I have both started karate ourselves.

Now Darren and his fantastic staff have moved further away from us to the new Dojo. We wish them the best of luck with the new venture and we will continue to support them.

I would just like to say to those who are linked to the Colchester Wado Ryu Karate that it is indeed the finest Karate club in North Essex. Over the years I have worked with several clubs, some good and some not so good and without doubt Colchester Wado Ryu is the finest I have come across to date.

If you train with Darren I must say that you are not only in safe hands during the club's sessions but also your Chief Instructor is a true gentleman with much martial spirit and great ideas for his club and its members for this year and beyond.

Keep safe all and continue to train hard, look after one another and most all of stay true and loyal to this club - it will continue to serve you all well!

I am lucky enough to have trained under Sensei Darren Reynolds at the Colchester Wado Ryu Karate club for the past four years. I came to the club after training in several local Dojo’s, and not quite finding what I was looking for. I immediately took a liking to the atmosphere, finding the training challenging but fun. The club is a family venture, with Darren’s two young sons now both teaching and training, and his lovely wife Sharon dealing with any enquiries. The junior lessons are fantastic, with lots of games and running around, but discipline and respect are always present. The senior lessons can be hard sometimes, but we all encourage each other and there is a great team spirit. Sometimes I have turned up and not really been in the mood for training, but the atmosphere just pulls you in and you’re always glad you made the effort. There’s always plenty of ‘friendly’ banter to make you push yourself just that little bit harder! No two lessons are the same, and I found myself learning and improving in every area. My overall fitness, flexibility and technique are all improved and more importantly, my confidence, awareness and manners have also grown. Under Darren’s guidance I have done things that I would never have had the courage to do before, and applied these lessons well in the Police force. I have gained the skills necessary to deal with any attacker, but more importantly, to have the courage to walk away if I can.

My family recently started training at Colchester Wado Ryu Karate club. I was instantly impressed with the pace and content of the classes, and was especially impressed with the instruction from Darren Reynolds. I have viewed several karate classes from other academy’s and had never previously been tempted to don a Gi and take part. Darren instilled me with the confidence I needed to go forward and give it a go.

It was a really brilliant move for me as my general health, fitness and weight have all improved from training as little as once a week. I particularly like the fact that the club is available to people all over the town as there are classes close to my work and my home. Another happy coincidence is the fact that my whole family are able to train at his sessions, and we are surrounded with other families which has helped us make friends too, the nice thing is that we now all share a common interest and it has brought us much closer!! And were keeping fit!! What more could we want?? Marks out of five, well I’d give it six.
