Hello everyone,
Poppy here again, sending furry greetings to you all.

For this blog, I thought I would tell you all about foods to avoid feeding to your cat.

It may be, of course, that your puss will not agree with my advice, because he or she may enjoy certain items on my list - however, some of these foodstuffs can be downright dangerous, and I don't want any of my fellow felines to have to make a trip to the vet when these simple tips could prevent this..

**Alcoholic beverages - these can cause intoxication, coma and even DEATH!

**Baby foods - some of these foods contain onion powder, which can be toxic to us kitties. If fed to us in large amounts, it can cause nutritional deficiencies.

**Bones from fish, poultry etc - these bones can cause obstructions and scratches in our digestive systems.

**Chocolate, coffee, tea and other caffeine sources - these contain caffeine, theophylline or theobromine. These are all toxic, and affect our hearts and
nervous systems.

**Citrus oil extracts - these can make us very sick.

**Dog food - if accidentally eaten, this will not cause a problem, but if you give thiis to us felines repeatedly, it could result in heart disease and malnutrition.

**Fat trimmings - these sound tasty, but they could cause us to suffer from pancreatitis.

**Liver - this sounds very yummy, but we kitties could suffer from Vitamin A toxicity which affects muscles and bones if you give this to us in large amounts.

**Macadamia nuts - these contain an unknown toxin which can affect our digestive and nervous systems, and muscles.

**Milk and other dairy products - yes, you probably are surprised to see this item on my list, as it is traditional to 'give puss a saucer of milk'. However dairy
products contain an enzyme called lactose which can cause us to have nasty bouts of sickness and diarrhoea. If you would still like to treat your furry friend to a bowl of milk, please buy some of the special cat milk available, ie a brand like Whiskas or Felix.

**Mushrooms - these can contain toxins which may affect multiple systems in the body, cause shock, and even result in DEATH.

**Onions and garlic (raw, cooked, or powder) - contain sulfoxides and disulfides, and these can  damage our blood cells, causing us to become anaemic. Garlic is less toxic than onions.

**Raw fish - we pussies may think that this would be delicious, but please don't be tempted to give it to your cat as it can result in a thiamine (a B vitamin) deficiency, whiich can lead to a loss of appetite, seizures, and in severe cases, DEATH. This is common if raw fish is fed regularly.

**Salt - if eaten in large quantities, salt can cause electrolyte imbalances.

**Sugary foods - we felines can become obese, diabetic, and suffer from dental problems if we are given sweet things to eat - yes, just the same as you humans!

**Table scraps - we shouldn't be given scraps from your dinner plates as they are not nutritious and could contain fat and bone - see above.

**Yeast dough - these doughs can expand and produce a gas in our digestive systems. This gas can cause pain and even rupturing of the stomach and intestines.

In summing up, may I ask you to ensure that you only give your puss a diet of good quality wet or dry cat food.
If you have any questions or worries on the subject, ask your vet for advice - there is such a wide range of foods available, including those targeting specific problems, like weight control, sensitive skin/tums, hairball control, and other problems.
