Town criers from around the world climbed to the top of the city’s cathedral tower to promote Cathedral at Height, Chester’s brand-new visitor attraction.

During a well-earned break from taking part in the Chester World Town Crier Tournament, 15 criers took the tower tour route to the roof of the central tower and performed a specially-commissioned ditty about Cathedral at Height.

The tower criers were also joined by a collection of criers and costumed escorts at ground level on St. Werburgh Street

This year, the city of Chester hosted the Town Crier World Tournament. 24 criers from 10 nations visited the city and took part in a week of sound, colour and pageantry.

Criers were entered from England, Wales, Ireland, Germany, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the Channel Islands and the USA.

Vice Dean of Chester Cathedral, Canon Peter Howell-Jones, said:

“It was amazing to see the criers in the cathedral and even better to see them at the top of the tower.  They were great sports and have really helped to promote our tower tour, Cathedral at Height.  We wish all of the competitors the best of luck – and hope they return to Chester, and the cathedral, very soon.”
