We went a couple of weeks ago for my birthday treat. Having been there a couple of weeks after they had opened and having been mostly disappointed by that experience we only chose it because the Grosvenor was fully booked. It was a busy Saturday night but what a difference there was this time!! The champagne bar appears to have been revamped and is much improved. The service was top notch and the food was excellent. We ordered the tasting menu with matching wines. O.H is on a gluten free diet and they accomodated this superbly without any fuss or bother. Fortunately we had booked a room for the night (O.H. only just made it back to it under her own steam). A really enjoyable experience and although it ain't cheap I think that on this showing it is a viable alternative to the Grosvenor. Thoroughly recommended for a special occasion. P.S. This was An Evening with Michael Caines at Abode Chester on Thursday 19th August. This was the first of what will be regular events three times a year where Michael takes us through the menu and his Sommelier describes the wines chosen to accompany them. Michael and Stuart Collins, the executive chef at the hotel, created the four courses and we had by chance heard of this which fitted perfectly for our plans for a special celebration. The evening started with an opportunity to meet Michael during a champagne reception in the champagne bar next to the restaurant on the fifth floor of the hotel. Delicious canapés were brought round and Michael circulated and spoke to everyone. The courses, once we were seated were: Salad of Confit Potato, Almond crusted haddock, Macclesfield beef fillet, Raspberry cremeux and followed by coffee and petit fours accompanied by 12 year old Jamaican rum. All the food was perfectly prepared, cooked and presented. It was difficult to pick a highlight, as Michael asked us afterwards, either the fish or the meat, but all was superb. To celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary, I wanted to treat my wife to something a bit special when we decided to go out for a meal on Saturday 24th July. Chester is so well blessed with decent restaurants that it takes something a bit different to attract diners - Michael Caines at the Abode manages just that. Booking online was simple. We decided to try a cocktail before dinner and, on being asked whether we were dining that evening, we were looked after in a very courteous and confident manner all evening by every member of staff. We were ushered through to the restaurant when the table became available and the whole dining experience was superb. Service, food, wine all excellent. My wife and I were both made to feel special - and it makes such a difference. The whole evening was a huge success and I'm trying to think of a reason to visist again in the near future - there was plenty on the menu that I'd like to try!!Tom J
