Many people want their homes to be secure but don't want to pay a fortune for it and so opt for low cost security options such as DIY alarms fitted by an electrician....
But before you buy a DIY alarm there are a few points to consider...
Standards
Does the alarm comply to the latest standards (EN50131)? If not, then it has not passed the basic level of testing required by the British standards (and most insurance companies!).
Looks
Look before you buy! Many salesmen can talk a good talk, however make sure you ask to see the equipment they will fit before they fit it - you are going to be seeing a lot of your new alarm panel!
Security
Older wireless alarms have "one way technology" which means that the detector can talk to the alarm but the alarm cannot talk back.
Also the wireless keyfobs supplied can accidentally unset the alarm at the press of a single button. Or, if your keys get lost or stolen so does your house alarm code.
The latest "two way technology" has cured these problems, keyfobs need an unset button and a code making them much more secure, also the detectors and the panel both talk and listen to each other making for a much happier relationship!!
Installers
All professional alarm companies belong to one of only two inspection bodies - the NSI or SSAIB. This means that all their staff are security cleared and that any system fitted is certified to current British Standards. These two inspection bodies are not only there to ensure that the company fits only quality equipment to a good standard, but also to protect the customer...if your alarm goes wrong at 2am... we HAVE to come out... would your electrician do the same?
And importantly...
If you read the very small print in your very large insurance policy you may well see that your alarm has to be maintained by an "approved company"...if in doubt ask your insurers before getting caught out!
