Conservatives retain Chelmsford despite Lib Dem campaign

The Conservative party is celebrating victory in Chelmsford today after securing the key seat for a further term with over 25,000 votes.

 

Simon Burns, the local candidate for the Conservative Party, enjoyed a winning margin of over 5,000 votes on his closest rival, Stephen Robinson of the Liberal Democrats with 20,097, with Pete Dixon of the Labour Party at third with 5,980.

 

Chelmsford was seen as a key seat for the Lib Dems as they aimed to secure a foothold across the UK in the outcome of a hung parliament. Despite intensive campaigning across the region by Stephen Robinson and his party, the Liberal Democrats were unable to snatch victory from the current governing Conservatives.

 

Ben Sherman of Chelmsford's 'Reduce Tax on Beer' party also garnered growing support for his first election, after 156 local residents turned out to support his campaign to bring down the cost of a pint.
