Chelmsford's Park and Ride Saturday closure contradicts Council's policy

Councillors are fighting to keep Chelmsford's Park and Ride open on Saturdays.

 

The Sandon Park and Ride opened in 2006 and has been a huge success. It now provides 900 spaces for people working and shopping in Chelmsford town centre.

 

The decision by the County Council to stop the service on a Saturday is a cost cutting measure. The Council argues they will save £85,000 per year. The facility is used much less on a Saturday than during the rest of the week.

 

However, closure of the facility seems to go against the County Council's policy of reducing pollution and carbon footprint by getting people out of cars and using public transport.

 

Only about half of the usual number of people use the Park and Ride service on a Saturday compared to the rest of the week, but those extra few hundred cars will now be going into the town centre, which is already set to become more congested as car parking spaces are lost when the new John Lewis development is built.

 

Mike Mackrory, a Liberal Democrat Councillor is arguing to get the decision changed.
