Qualifications

You must have held a full UK unrestricted car driving licence for a total of at least 4 out of the past 6 years, and not have been disqualified from driving at any time in the 4 years prior to being entered in the Register.

You must be able to read a motor car number plate at a distance of 27.5m (90 feet).

A disclosure form needs to be submitted so that a criminal record check can be carried out. You will not be considered for Registration without your disclosure reference number.

Theory Test

A single Touchscreen test of 100 multiple choice questions to be answered in 90 minutes. The questions are banded in 4 main areas:

* road procedure
* traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians, mechanical knowledge
* driving test, disabilities, law
* instructional techniques, publications

Overall pass mark is 85%, but you must achieve a minimum of 80% in each of 4 bands.

Hazard Perception Test

14 1-minute video clips containing 15 developing hazards. Click the mouse as soon as you see a hazard developing which may result in the driver taking some action, such as changing speed or direction. The sooner a response is made the higher the score. Pass mark is 57/75

Parts 1/2 Eyesight Test / The Test of Driving Ability and Technique
The test includes: an eyesight test, 5 questions on basic vehicle maintenance checks carried out before driving, and the advanced driving test lasting 1 hour.
A brisk, business-like, smooth, progressive drive to a very high standard of competence is required, using appropriate driving techniques. You are allowed up to 6 driver faults.

Part 3 Test of Ability to Instruct
This 1 hour test assesses the value of the instruction you give and your ability to pass this knowledge on to pupils.

You will need to give practical driving instruction to the examiner who will first take on the role of a pupil who is a beginner with limited driving knowledge, and then either a pupil who is about at test standard, or an experienced driver who needs corrective tuition.

To assess performance, the examiner takes into account

* the method, adequacy, clarity, and correctness of instruction given;
* the observation, analysis and correction of faults committed by the 'pupil';
* your general manner

Course Duration
The DSA allows up to 2 years from the date on which the Theory test is passed to complete Parts 2/3.
