Winners of the Silver Award in the "National Enjoy England Awards for Excellence", Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery is a major regional tourist attraction, hosting regular exhibitions, daily lunchtime talks and active workshops for all ages and interests.

 

Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery houses a collection of nearly 200,000 objects providing a rich, historic education in Social history, Archaeology, Wildlife & Geology and Fine & Decorative Arts. One of the museum's major strengths is the development of an active education section that offers both in-house and outreach resources for schools, students and community projects.

Tullie House Collections

 

Social History - reflecting everyday life and local industries from around 1800. Earlier items include materials from the Civil War, the Jacobite Rebellion and the City Trades Guilds. The Museum also boasts an extensive photographic archive and a range of oral history recordings.

 

Archaeology - important collections cover Cumbrian Prehistory, Roman Cumbria, The Dark Ages and Medieval Cumbria. The Museum hosts a number of important excavation archives including several from recent work in Carlisle. These include Bronze Age, Roman, Dark Age, Saxon and Medieval objects.

 

Wildlife and Geology - large and important collections, including zoology, botany and geology incorporating substantial holdings of insects, birds and mammals, British herbaria, minerals, rock and fossils. Tullie House is also the main database for biological field records under the Cumbria Biological Data network. Geological site records are also held at Tullie House.

 

Fine and Decorative Arts - this includes local artists from:

 

  • 18th Century to present day
  • 19th Century and Pre-Raphaelite artists
  • Contemporary artists

 

Decorative art includes ceramics, metalwork, furniture and musical instruments dating from 1564.

 

Costume and textiles include around 7,000 items including accessories and textiles dating from 1720.

 

Listening Wall

 

The 'listening wall' is fitted with many small speakers allowing you to listen to the voices and thoughts of local people.

More than a Museum

 

Carlisle's Tullie House has an award winning family friendly restaurant serving delicious snacks and meals, while the Tullie House gift shop is the perfect place to find unique gifts and souvenirs, featuring locally crafted goods.

 

Weddings and Functions

 

Carlisle's Tullie House is a popular venue for conferences, weddings and other events.

 

The restaurant can host up to 100 guests for a sit-down event and the Art Gallery or underground Millenium Gallery can cater for up to 300 guests for a drinks and canapés reception.

 

The private garden lends itself to outdoor entertaining of either a buffet meal or barbeque during summer evenings.

 

The Meeting Room with its flexible configuration is ideal as a meeting or training room. If you require something more formal for a conference, training, lecture or presentation then the Lecture Theatre tiered seating for up to 100 delegates may be more suitable.

 

Tullie House is a popular choice for wedding receptions both large and small. The Victorian Theatre offers tiered seating for up to 100 guests and the Morning Room which overlooks Abbey Street Gardens is suitable for more intimate wedding parties of up to 30 guests.
