Kyloes Inns is famous for a thing or two, namely good food and drink served at the Highland Drove Inn (Gt Salkeld) and the Cross Keys (Carleton).

Nestling in the Eden Valley (and only 15 minutes from Carlisle!) the Highland Drove Inn continues the tradition of hundreds of years of hospitality but with a modern twist. Its award winning Kyloes restaurant has its chefs firmly rooted in the 21st century. Using the finest ingredients from local suppliers they serve up great pub food that sees people from flocking from near and far to enjoy the Kyloes restaurant.

The Highland Drove Inn has a great pub atmosphere that is both relaxing and friendly. In addition to fantastic pub food and unparalleled wine list, it serves real ales and regularly has guest beers. By making the Highland Drove and Kyloes restaurant one of the consistently best places to eat and drink in Cumbria, father and son team Donald and Paul Newton have also shown that the English Country Pub is alive and well!!

The Highland Drove Inn can cater for weddings, private parties and functions of up to 60 people. It also has 5 fantastically refurbished en-suite bedrooms; so if you are looking for comfortable accommodation for the night or if for a holiday click here.

The Highland Drove Inn is a place to get very excited about, but don't just take our word for it. It has been voted Real Ale Pub of the Year for 2 consecutive years, awarded the Cumbria Dining Pub of the Year and Les Routiers has chosen it as one its Northern Dining Pubs of the Year.

The Cross Keys: 01768 865588

The Cross Keys (Carleton) is equally superlative offering a great pub atmosphere downstairs and fantastic restaurant dining upstairs. The restaurant has stunning panoramic view of the Lake District Fells and is easily accessible from Carlisle (only 15 minutes away!).

The Cross Keys has been completely renovated and the Kyloes Grill upstairs offers a menu to complement its sister restaurant at the Highland Drove Inn with everything from a quick and tasty snack to the complete Kyloes Grill experience with it signature T-Bone steak. However, its popularity means that booking is usually recommended!

The Cross Keys is a popular place for pool, men's and ladies darts, quiz nights and dominos. It also has a beer garden where you can take in the view, breathe in the fresh air and settle down to enjoy yourself. The Cross Keys is also available if you are looking for somewhere special to celebrate a birthday, wedding or christening.

I have been going to The Highland Drove Inn for over 10 years (I've just come back from England on my umpteenth trip) and have recommended the extra distance to my Canadian friends as top rated and worth the effort. Consistently excellent food (try the Nile perch). Terrific wine cellar. Amenable and friendly hosts and hostess. Unrushed atmosphere. Classic pub. Clean and comfortable rooms. Everything is as it should be and if I am anywhere near this establishment while in England, it becomes a destination of choice. I'll guarantee it!

We have dined at the Cross Keys, Penrith, many times, and the food is always excellent. We have tried various things from the menu and have always enjoyed them. Sunday roasts are also delicious. A friendly and well run pub. Definately worth a visit. RJB

The Highland Drove is a great country pub with real atmosphere often lost at so many other country inns. Kyloes Restaurant is a great dining experience - a great mix of inventive dishes and the classics. It is varied often enough to keep us going back time and time again. Donald, the hard working Landlord, always offers friendly banter behind the bar and is happy to serve food in the less formal dining area downstairs. The Cross Keys is a great addition to Penrith. A local pub on the edge of the town. The food is equally as tasty but offers pub style food, albeit of a very high standard, rather than the fine dining found at The Drove. It has be spectacularly refurbished and extended and is a great pub for a enjoying selection of ales and good food with friends and family. The service is always attentive, and Paul runs an efficient ship. Keep up the good work!

Visited the Highland Drove three times during our two week holiday this summer. Excellent food, warm and helpful staff and one or two nicely kept beers.

Popped in on the off chance of a table as we were driving through and found everyone very helpful. We were amazed by the beautiful dining room with such magnificent views. It was all very tastefully done. We had a lovely meal, thank you! Although we just opted for the Sunday Roast this time, we would certainly call again if we were in the area and would tackle some of the more interesting items on the menu. Good value and overall a very pleasurable experience. Thank you!

The Drovers Inn...Great Salkeld: The best pan-fried duck I ever had anywhere. A down to earth landlord with a sense of humour, and a sweet chatty waitress and an unbeatable atmosphere. AND WHAT A MENU...My ambition now is to try everything on it, and I intend to do so....WATCH THIS SPACE!!!!!

Best food i have had in a long time!! Staff: well presented, very well mannered and very helpfull. Ambiance: Warm and inviting. Take a seat in the bar, have a drink and relax whilst awaiting your food order. When your order is ready, you are invited to a table in the resteraunt. Food: Presentation was extremely good. True flavours. Local produce. Nothing overwhelms, other than the portions served. Everything on the plate keeps it own flavour. Prices are great for such quality food, suits any pocket, even for families with children. Having eaten here twice, during a visit to the lakes, i can certainly say, "I most certainly will be back time and time again"

Excellent food, friendly staff, huge portions- You'll find yourself coming back to the Cross Keys Inn over and over again (We were in Penrith for two days and ate here twice!) Remember to book, this place is likely to be busy. Definitely recommended.
