Fair Trade is about providing decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair prices for workers and farmers in the developing world.

What is Fair trade?

Fair trade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. Fair Trade addresses the injustices of conventional trade by requiring companies to pay above market prices to smaller, poorer or weaker producers who would normally be discriminated against. Thus it gives these groups of producers a chance to improve conditions and have more control over their lives.

Criteria for Fair Trade Goods

1. There is no child labour involved and children go to school.
2. A fair wage is paid to enable families to afford food and medical care.
3. An additional Social Premium  is paid on top of the wages to allow for community development projects such as infrastructure, wells, roads, hospitals, schools.
4. Low interest loans can be made available to co-operatives for start up
5. Fair Trade ensure payments are made quickly to Third World suppliers as whilst cash-flow is essential to any business, time is particularly of the essence to these producers.
