As a meat eater do you consider your health and ask if

It has too much fat?
Is it too red?
Where does it come from?
Is it local?

There is great debate on food miles these days so cooking and eating meat locally sourced has got to be good for the local economy and the planet.

Many of us meat eaters are used to the traditional offerings of Beef, Lamb, Pork and Poultry not to mention Duck, Venison and the occasional Pigeon but what about Rabbits or even Squirrel?

Yes Squirrel!!

In particular Grey Squirrel not the endangered Red Squirrel. Did you know it tastes between a mixture of Duck and Lamb, with a sweetish undertone,  is low in fat (not really surprising seeing how agile squirrels are!!) and because they are local – low  in food miles!! And completely Free Range. – in fact a very healthy meat.  The Squirrels diet is healthy as they eat predominately hazel nuts and berries –  oh yes and my bird seed!!

So would you eat  Grey Squirrel?   You will have the opportunity tomorrow evening at Traeth Bar & Grill up in New Quay (Ceredigion)

Nigel Jones who has just spent a day assisting in the Cookery School  of Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons will have Squirrel on his menu tomorrow and it sounds wonderful!!

Nige has created a tasty starter:
Squirrel and Hazelnut pithivier (miniature pastie)
with local oakleaf lettuce and blackberry salad.
