Cannock Chase MP Aidan Burley is to play a game for Rugeley Rugby Club on Saturday 26h March 2011.

The Merit League Fixture is between Rugeley 2nd XV and The Birmingham Barbarians and will be held at the Hagley Playing Fields in Rugeley with a Kick off Time of 2.30pm.

This follows on from a promise made by Aidan shortly after the election at the Rugby Club’s annual Dinner. A former scrum-half, Aidan has not played rugby for many years, but offered to dust off his boots for a match.

Aidan has already shown his support for the club by wearing the club tie during his swearing in at Parliament.

Rugeley Rugby Club Captain Martin de Ridder said: “We are delighted Aidan is going to play for us.  Aidan agreed to be guest of honour at our annual dinner at short notice last year.  At the end of the evening he pledged to play in a match for our second team and our members are delighted to have an MP who has stuck to his promises.  The Birmingham Barbarians are just below us in the merit table but they are a friendly bunch and I expect it will be an enjoyable match.”

Aidan added: "I have not played rugby for many years and am a little concerned at the size of some of them, but I’m looking forward to getting stuck in and supporting my local rugby team!”
