The £1.3 billion planned upgrade to the A14 was suspended yesterday in a raft of cuts announced by the Government.
Danny Alexander, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, outlined that further review would be required before a decision could be made on the projects future: "As a result of the poor decisions made by the previous Government, I have taken the decision to cancel certain projects that do not represent good value for money, and suspend others pending full consideration in the spending review."
The decision, which was welcomed by some local campaigners, has caused concern within local business groups who fear the essential upgrade could mean the loss of future investment in the city and make Cambridge a less enticing prospect for transport reliant businesses looking to move here.
The cuts and suspensions which amount to £10.5 billion in total are part of an overall effort by the new coalition Government to tackle what they called 'Britain's biggest peacetime deficit'.
