Cambridge Rugby Club has revealed it is confident it will raise the required £225,000 needed to protect it from a recent 'winding up' order.
A campaign organised by fans of Cambridge RUFC and several local businesses named 'The 1923 Club' has outlined it has already raised over £150,000 to help the club survive massive tax debts it owes the HMRC.
Players and staff have not been paid since September due to financial problems at the club who are currently sitting second in the National One table, just five points away from league leaders Barking.
Steve Bowller from the campaign explained the survival of the club was down directly to the efforts of loyal fans: "We've got to look after them now, and that's why we've got to keep the momentum going and look after the boys. There's a lot of people out there who thought we were dead in the water, but we've proved we can do it."
"It's a reflection on the effort of everybody here, it's quite outstanding."
