Leagues of dedicated football fans descended on Cambridge yesterday for England's key World Cup game against Germany.

Unfortunately, they were left with their heads in their hands after England were dealt a crushing 4-1 defeat and early exit from the competition.

Pubs across the city centre reported record takings across the day. The Regal in Cambridge in particular was full to the rafters for the crucial match at the Free State Stadium.

A soaring header from West Ham's Matthew Upson put England on the scoreboard, alongside a controversial disallowed goal from Chelsea's Frank Lampard.

However, goals from Miroslav Klose, Thomas Mueller and two from Lukas Podolski dealt England their heaviest World Cup finals loss in the past 50 years.
